How we estimate garage door costs

Every number on this site comes from a transparent pricing engine. Here is exactly how it works, what data feeds it, and how we keep it accurate.

(Base Door + Opener + Labor + Removal + Permit + Accessories + Upgrades + Disposal)
× Regional Multiplier × Material Multiplier × Complexity Multiplier
= Estimated Total Cost
01

Base door cost

We start with researched material cost per door section — steel, insulated steel, aluminum, wood, fiberglass, vinyl, composite, glass, carriage, and custom — scaled by door size (single, double, triple) and insulation level.

02

Opener & accessories

We add the opener drive type (chain, belt, screw, jackshaft, wall-mount, smart Wi-Fi, or commercial) plus any accessories and upgrades such as windows, keypads, smart hubs, wind reinforcement, or hurricane packages.

03

Labor

Installation labor is estimated from typical crew hours and each state's average hourly rate, then adjusted by installation complexity for the chosen material and door style.

04

Removal, permits & disposal

Where applicable we include removal of the existing door and opener, local permit averages, and disposal fees — costs many quotes hide until the end.

05

Regional & complexity multipliers

The subtotal is adjusted by state-level labor and material multipliers, plus a complexity factor for door style and commercial applications, producing a low–average–high range.

Data & accuracy

Where our numbers come from

Our dataset combines published contractor and retail pricing, regional labor benchmarks, and permit schedules.

Figures represent national and regional averages for planning purposes. They are not a formal quote — actual pricing depends on your specific door, site conditions, and the installer you choose. For a firm price, we connect you with vetted local professionals.

Our pricing dataset is versioned (currently 2026.1) and refreshed as material and labor markets shift. State multipliers reflect relative labor and material cost differences, and city-level indices refine estimates further within each state.

Estimates are for informational purposes and may vary from contractor quotes.
